with brown? purity can’t
be dampened and brown
isn’t black enough for worth:
just
brown.
Marriaging the two means
less white, forgetful brown,
nothing
new. Absent colors. Loss of each.
When it snows, I miss
mountains against the sky,
squinting,
searching for the imprint;
heartless, sometimes
it hides behind
ice-crystals: I’m
blinded.
Once, I had mud on
my face, once
I cried, growing a white
chasm against dried
earth-stains, rivulets
of tear-craters dropping
chin-first into the air.
My mom’s hope chest,
dusted with memory’s
neglectful powder held
my first grade sheet.
Favorite color:
Brown.
And then, it was mixed
with purity.
