DC: Mount Vernon and Kennedy Center

Mount Vernon was the home of George Washington, serving to house several hundred house-guests per year while undergoing constant renovations and expansions.

Washington was interested in the appearance of his Vernon facade, and went to extensive efforts to make the front appear to be stone.  He removed all the wood paneling, beveled it (cut and trimmed it to appear as stone), and painted the surface.  He threw buckets of sand on the wet paint, and repeated the process several times until the woods looked and felt like actual stone.  It was as rough as sandpaper.
