The New Mexican art scene is fabled to nearly rival that of New York, albeit boasting a distinct and separate style. From my vantage, New Mexican art is strongly influenced by culture (i.e.-Spanish and Native American undertones).
The subjects tend toward the desert scenery, native peoples and activities, and the animals such people revere. The colors are terrifically vibrant- orange, turquoise, yellow, pink; colors are splayed with little regard to shadows and lighting, and tend to seem two-dimensional. Strokes are large, broad, and strong- much like the spirits of the painters themselves.
Several mediums seem to crop up over and over- oils, sculpting, pottery and ceramics, and of course.. jewelry!
